Love the reference to James Cameron's Titanic. But Alvin and the CHipmunks won't stay long on that cruise boat: they'll have to spend some time on a tropical island in middle of the ocean.

The third opus of Alvin and the Chipmunks is officially titled Alvin and The Chipmunks Chip-Wrecked. Take a look to the first official plot synopsis:

Plot:
"On vacation aboard a luxury cruise ship, Alvin, Simon, Theodore and the Chipettes are up to their usual antics, turning the ship into their personal playground, until they become 'chipwrecked' on a desert island. As Dave Seville frantically searches for his AWOL charges, the 'Munks and Chipettes do what they do best – sing, dance and wreak havoc. But they're in for a surprise when they embark on an island adventure with their new friend – a castaway who's more than a match for Alvin and the Chipmunks."

Alvin and the Chipmunks Chip-Wrecked
On January 22, 2011, Fox 2000 Pictures started production on Alvin and the Chipmunks Chip-Wrecked during a Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Dream ship. Filming took place primarily on the ship's upper, open decks with scenes featuring actor Jason Lee (reprising his role as Dave Seville) and the antics of The Chipmunks in the Carnival Dream's outdoor recreation areas. Stops on the itinerary included Cozumel, Roatan, Belize and Costa Maya (which provided tropical backdrops for many of the movie’s shipboard scenes).

As expected 20th Century Fox confirmed that a third Alvin and the Chipmunks movie will be produced. And they announced that this new sequel will be done in 3D.

The official release date of Alvin and the Chipmunks 3, aka Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D, is set for December 16, 2011.

Is there any song you would like the Chipmunks or maybe the Chipettes to interpret in the movie Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D?

The second opus of the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie franchise isn't out yet, but I bet 20th Century Fox is already planning Alvin and the Chipmunks 3. And it does make financial sense: the average production cost is at $60 million, the first film generated more than $359 million gross revenue, and the second will most likely bring in as much. This franchise is a real cash cow for the studios!

Why such a success? Well The Alvin and the Chipmunks movie series is just the ideal Christmas franchise: those squirrels are so cute, and who could resist to this trio of singing critters? And the way they remix famous music hits is so awesome, that people yearn for the soundtracks.

So we can be sure that there is a new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie sequel ahead of us!

The first film introduced us to the singing trio, and then the the Chipettes joined the party in the second movie. But what could be the plot of Alvin and the Chipmunks 3? Any suggestion for the screenwriters? Do you prefer a brand new story or should they dig further into the source material?
